'By your command' and beyond What is Vocoding? You have heard vocoding many times, even if you don’t know what it is. Vocoders are the classic robot voice from many sci-fi movies. Vocoders analyze the real-time frequency band activity of one sound, the Modulator, to control frequency band activity in another, the Carrier.

A vocoder consists of a series of narrow-band frequency gates that allow through only those frequencies from the Carrier that are detected in the Modulator source. So if a human voice is used to vocode a synthesizer chord, it will sound like the synthesizer is talking. Check the demo tracks above.

If you select a 'Carrier synthesiser' at the bottom of Vocodex, you can choose which notes are played by left-clicking the notes, but this can't be controlled in realtime with any keyboard. Open Sytrus in the Channel Rack, click the dropdown on the top-left of Sytrus -> Presets, then scroll to the end where you'll find a list of presets under 'Vocoder carriers'. Select whatever one you like. Once you've selected a carrier you like, follow the tutorial wrote up below on how to link that to Vocodex.

You will now be able to use your computer keyboard to play notes with Sytrus, which will be fed into Vocodex as a carrier.:) • • • • •. With the Vocodex inbuilt carrier synthesizer (The keyboard and carrier selection at the bottom of the interface) you can use a midi keyboard only when Vocodex is focused/selected. There is currently no other method of control for the inbuilt synthesizer. You can however (as coranns suggested) use the sidechain input feature of vocodex to use an alternate audio source/synthesizer to do the same job, albeit with more performance/recording flexibility (where you can use the piano roll to control what would then be the carrier synthesizer). In the above image there are 2 mixer channels, the first is what you are wanting to vocode (this is what will have the vocodex plugin on) and the second which will be your carrier synth (what you will be using to mimic the synthesizer at the bottom of the vocodex plugin).
